Lyrics
:
Rose Beyond The Wall (E-zee Hire demo Nov 84) Out come the flags and banners again It's Memorial Day, my friend Will the circle ever end in our time While we're hung up on the past The future that we want we can't have Will always be beyond our grasp Oh heil the kings and queens I've bowed my head for the very last time And I've sung the phrase Now won't you loose me Loose me from these chains And now you've filled your hands with power Watched your boys young dream turn sour And you've trown away those beautiful flowers And once you'd symbolised the dream To be the generations to free this world to live in peace Oh heil the presidents men There's still one flower left to pick Please spare a thought For the rose The rose beyond the wall Lay to rest the reverense of predudice And now we lay down all false pretences Put down the past, look away into the future Cause I'm not gonna respect without 5 seconds silence Please, please, please Oh heil the kings and queens There's still one flower left to pick Please spare a thought For the rose beyond the wall

:Completely different arrangement and lyrics to 1987 Hurricane sessions version.
Recorded 29th-30th November 1984: E-Zee Hire Studios, London. Demo tape sessions recorded by live sound engineer Nigel Luby. The band sent these tapes to America in December 1984 to legendary US record producer Jimmy Iovine who agreed to record the band in January 1985. The album was going to be titled “Absolute Reality” and a tour was booked to coincide with its projected release. Unfortunately, Iovine never came to Britain to record with The Alarm, Iovine claimed an illness in his family prevented him from travelling. However, it didn’t stop him recording “Once Upon A Time” for Simple Minds. Rumour has it that The Alarm were gazumped by Simple Minds who secured Iovine’s services for a larger advance payment.
