‘Levis And Bibles’ [4:58] (Mike Peters), Mike Peters
Lead Vocals:Mike Peters
Lyrics
:
Blowin' down a highway in a cadillac Yellow rose of Texas on a radio band I don't know where I'm going or when I'm coming back I heard about a promise in these hard heartlands There's a lonely hotel in the distance A tumbleweed shotgun shack I'm just another lonely rider On the road to hell and back Levi's and bibles Scattered across this land Scarecrows and crosses Of promises that turn to dust in my hand Levi's and bibles Scattered by a dust storm across a river bed I'm walking in the shadows of my fathers footsteps For every crooked dollar a single honest cent It's hard to be a saint in this world my friend As the miles stretch out before me There's another town up ahead I've got my foot down hard to the metal And I'm driving straight to hell Levi's and bibles Scattered across this land Scarecrows and crosses Of promises that turn to dust in my hand Levi's and bibles Stand on it Stand on it and drive Stand on it Stand on it and drive Levi's and bibles Scattered across this land Scarecrows and crosses In a hard heartland Levi's and bibles Scattered across this land Scarecrows and crosses Of promises that turn to dust in my hand Levi's and bibles Stand on it Stand on it and drive Stand on it Stand on it and drive (Levis and bibles) (Levis and bibles) (Levis and bibles) Levis and bibles (Levis and bibles) There scatterered across this land (Levis and bibles) Like scarecrows and crosses (Levis and bibles) (Levis and bibles)

Mike Peters Notes
:”They say that songs are just hanging in the air, waiting for someone to come along and discover them. Well, I discovered this song whilst on a driving holiday in America. I wanted to see more of the country I have spent so much time in. America is known as the land of the free, the epicentre of western culture, and a few years ago the most smuggled items from the free west to the repressed east were either a pair of Levi’s or a copy of The Bible; the very symbols of personal and spiritual freedom. As I drove along Route 66, I saw more of the USA than I had ever seen before. I carried a Dictaphone to sing into whilst driving and I was inspired by many startling images along the way. Route 66 used to be the Mother Road of America, carrying not only people heading out west, but also their hopes and dreams, and as I drove past the deserted filling stations and abandoned motels, I could almost hear the ghost of their voices singing ‘Levi’s and Bibles’.”
